Designing Drawdown Europe Research Association

Translating global climate solutions into local climate actions

The challenge

Since the start of the Drawdown movement in 2014, Project Drawdown has produced models for 100 solutions that together can reverse climate disruption. The solutions are very diverse, across different sectors, for example food production, energy production, regenerative agriculture and family planning.

Drawdown is the moment when the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere begins to decrease. It is necessary that we restore the natural CO2 balance so that we can combat global warming.

The actions against climate disruption started a number of years ago with changes within the energy system. A wide range of solutions is still being overlooked.

The solution

The solutions consist of realistic applications, but also address the communication and education possibilities to accelerate the momentum towards Drawdown. In 2017, the solutions were first shared in the New York Times Bestseller “Drawdown”, by author Paul Hawken.

Drawdown Europe was founded with the aim of translating the solutions of Project Drawdown to the European context. In order to be able to act, knowledge is needed that is relevant to the context in question. The Drawdown model has so far been developed worldwide, but to make concrete steps this model will need to be translated to local levels. For this reason, Drawdown Europe Research Assosation (DERA) is working on translating the existing models to the local European context.

DERA makes the intellectual content accessible, relevant and usable for cities and governments, multiple business sectors, industries, NGOs, service providers and educational institutions.

To this end, DERA is developing, together with potential users, an online research platform with user-oriented tools to enable users to make decisions: A living ecosystem of climate solutions in Europe.

The impact

Project Drawdown aims to reverse global warming. If we apply the solutions from the book Project Drawdown worldwide from now on, we have the potential to jointly restore the CO2 balance. But the solutions are not about the climate alone. They also lead to social benefits such as increasing the quality of life and reducing hunger and poverty.

Drawdown describes a system in which human well-being is in harmony with nature, with global economies flourishing. It serves as the inspiration and trust needed to build a regenerative society. DERA takes the recognized model and translates science into real action. The knowledge and skill is present, it is now a question of connecting the loose links.

The role of EIT Climate-KIC

The cooperation with EIT Climate-KIC is self-evident because of the European network of EIT Climate-KIC, which includes climate oriented partners who can make an important contribution to the data and models. But above all EIT Climate-KIC has the network and works with the target groups for which the Drawdown solutions are relevant. For example, the contacts with cities and regions (Deep Demonstrations) which is very important for the DERA ecosystem. It is an extensive climate solutions project which EIT Climate-KIC co-finances.
