EIT Climate-KIC supports the Learn-Work Agreement ‘Energy Transition Built Environment’ of Rotterdam

Energy transition leads to new job opportunities

Rotterdam is working towards the ‘Rotterdam Klimaatakkoord’ in which the built environment (housing, non-residential construction and business parks) and clean energy are important pillars. In the short term, the current staff shortages on the labour market in the Rotterdam-Rijnmond region are an obstacle to economic growth, as is the acceleration of the energy transition. In the long term, the energy transition and the related necessary systemic changes will bring both opportunities and threats to the nature and extent of employment.

Therefore, the Laern-Work Agreement Built Environment has been developed for a win-win situation in the field of energy transition for the city and its inhabitants. With this agreement Rotterdam aims to cash in on the employment opportunities offered by the energy transition, while at the same time ensuring that the city has the right people to realise the energy transition in the built environment. An important starting point for realising these positive social and economic effects is a permanent dialogue between government, education and the business community. In addition, a participatory approach at district level with the close involvement of the residents is also very important.

The people living in the neighbourhoods where the energy transition is taking place will be actively involved in the implementation of the energy transition wherever possible. This requires more than just an energy transition, but also major changes in behaviour and a systemic transformation. In order to set this movement in motion, EIT Climate-KIC supports the Rotterdam initiative with (educational) activities aimed at future competencies, social and systemic change that are associated with the energy transition.

On Thursday 4 July, EIT Climate-KIC has demonstrated its involvement during a ceremonial meeting in Rotterdam. Inez Westermann is part of the Steering Group Learn-Work Agreement with all partners to ensure alignment with the EIT Climate-KIC strategy and to provide the connection with our (educational) activities.
