Nature Based Solutions, Creating climate-resilient cities with the help of nature

The challenge

Nature Based Solutions are innovations that are inspired and supported by nature, and could be essential to the development of green, climate-resilient cities. For example, green roofs and walls in cities can be used to moderate the impact of high temperatures, capture storm water, abate air pollution, and act as carbon sinks, while at the same time enhancing biodiversity. Despite the opportunities presented by nature based solutions, and the urgent need for climate adapation measures, the deployment of these solutions within urban environments remains limited.

The solution

As part of the Nature Based Solutions project, Deltares and Wageningen University & Research have developed a cross-European innovation ecosystem, bringing together key stakeholders in the field. The network conducted desk research on the current trends and lessons learned, and organised expert workshops with stakeholders.

The Nature Based Solutions project created knowledge exchange between a wide array of experts, both from the EIT Climate-KIC community and the wider network of project partners. Representatives from academic institutions, municipalities, corporates, ngo’s and start-ups participated. The project identified the scope and next steps in collectively working to upscale Nature Based Solutions – with the ambition to deliver resilient urban environments with a higher quality of life.

The impact

The Nature-Based Solutions project connected key people in the field, thus accelerating the creation of green, resilient cities.
