EcoAdapt Climate Portal – Flanders effectively get to work with climate measures

Dutch version

The challenge

Cities and municipalities are confronted with climate challenges and are faced with questions such as: How can floods be prevented? How much infiltration and storage capacity should be created? What can we do against heat? Which strategic locations can be designated to plant trees?

Although cities are already implementing climate adaptation measures, there is as yet insufficient insight into which measures will produce the greatest effects. Setting adaptation targets and systematically monitoring the extent to which targets have already been achieved and what more needs to be done, remains a major challenge for adaptation.

The solution

Research organisation VITO started the EcoAdapt project in 2018. This project resulted in a first prototype that demonstrates how cities and municipalities can easily gain insight into the risks of specific locations. It shows how well thought-out and systemic adaptation measures can reduce climate risks.

In a follow-up project, the prototype will be further elaborated and, above all, the right market channels will be searched for the further roll out of EcoAdapt.

The most important added value of this solution is to calculate the impact of adaptation measures on the reduction of climate risks but also on the improvement of air quality, recreation and well being.

For further market penetration EcoAdapt is not offered as a standalone tool, but mainly looks at integration with existing tools. For example, it is being investigated whether this portal could be merged with the Climate Portal Flanders, the Future Proofed Cities portal and the Green Tool Antwerp.

The impact

Climate adaptive measures in cities ensure that climate damage is limited. Easily accessible information on climate risks and the impact of measures to reduce these risks is important to make cities and towns resilient in the long term. In this way, already planned area development initiatives can also take into account the impact on climate/nature.

The role of EIT Climate-KIC

In this project, EIT Climate-KIC contributes its knowledge in the field of systemic thinking and market orientation. It provides support in sharpening the questioning of potential users so that the Eco-Adapt Climate Portal can be brought closer to the market. VITO has also received funding from EIT Climate-KIC.
